(and around)
Glasgow's necropolis (25 October 2007)
After a working trip to Edinburgh and Glasgow, I spent a few days in the remnants of the Caledonian Pine Forest.
As well as wanting to know what such forests are like, I wanted to get a sense of what the area around Stonehenge used to be like 8000 years ago or so. After the last ice age ended and the first forest that spread across Britain was dominated by Caledonian Pines. In a clearing near what is now Stonehenge, someone erected three (or more) large posts. The holes these stood in are now marked by the "three white blobs" in English Heritage's Stonehenge carpark. (See photos here).
