Cats

This is mostly a record of Solomon's diet.

But it is also about Sappho to whom we said farewell on 17 July 2008.

Day one of the diet (11 Oct 2006)

Weighing in at 9.5 kg

with a target weight of 5.5 kg to be achieved in 43 weeks.

Yes, ok, that means he is 72.8% over-weight - but he's oh so cuddly and purry.

After two weeks he's down to 9.3 kg - bettering his target weight-loss of 95g per week.

hurrah!

(24 Oct 2006)

Four weeks into diet and the weight loss has slowed down a bit - he's now 9.2kg

(7 November 2006)

Yes, I know its a blurry picture - I wouldn't have used it apart from the fun of seeing apparent movement (hover over it) ... ah, the simple pleasures of life.

9kg cat - 21 November (6 weeks into diet). On target.

Here eating at the top of the stairs after a quick run.

(Yes the bowl does have dogs on it and its still one of Solomon's favourites, especially with food in.)

OK, its time for a photo or two of Sappho in her element:

Sappho snug in a rug
  Sappho basking by the fire

The pinnacle of evolution: from tree branch to chair back in how many millennia? No doubt it would have been quicker if the apes had learnt the art of making cushions faster ...

And so back to the scales:

We didn't take Solomon's photo last month - maybe something to do with him failing to loose any weight that time.

But today (13 March 2007) he's at 8.3 kg

Solomon making ripples (13 March 2007)

13 May 2007

Slow improvement (8.2 kg) - but look at the early summer growth around the pond!

7.54 kilos - 1 July 2007.

Just over half way to the target weight.

hurrah.

    Sappho finds another nest

Solomon at 7.5 kg - 31 July 2007

with a reprieve from the nurse who now says she'll be happy if he loses just one more kilo ...

Solomon on 28 August 2007 - in his study / dining room ... at 7.3 kg

Caught in the act: Solomon in the utility room trying to get Sappho's food.

September 2007

But don't worry: remarkably he continued to lose weight and on 5 October he was 7.2 kg.

hurrah!

Sun seeking Sappho or is it Sappho seeking Sun?

4 Nov 2007.

On 29 November, Solomon weighed in at 6.9 kg - but I forgot to take a photo.

To make up for it, here are two from 7 December ...

the cat's whiskers.

OK, yes, he missed the target date but the good news for all of us is that we've agreed a new target weight of 6.5 kg or maybe 6kg ...

Molly tells us this isn't a surf board, but Sappho and I aren't so sure.

Later Sappho will try to nest on the pile of fresh ironing as long as it stays warm.

8 Dec 2007

Still 6.8 kg - obviously he heard the word "plateau" (of weight stability) and thought it a comfortable place to lurk for a while ... So, more running up and down stairs for the New Year

mid-March 2008 - Solomon is still on a plateau, just can't shed the grams ...

and a month ago we were getting ready to bury Sappho - but after an unpleasant visit to the vet (Sappho doesn't travel well) and a couple of injections she's almost kittenish again - even with wobbly hips she's back to leaping from kitchen table to sink surround (when she feels that's better than going out in the rain to drink from the pond).

but here they are snoozing happily in their currently favourite chair.

it could be that Solomon's discovery that some bird seeds are tasty doesn't help ... not that we put seed on the ground too often (otherwise Solomon and Sappho might be snacking on birds as well).

never mind the cat's whiskers, here's a chin full of milk (and a spooky flash effect in the eyes)

Solomon at the catnip

22 June 2008

(day after summer solstice)

and that's that.

shows off the new slim line tummy though. a mere 6.6 kg.

just to show that Solomon isn't alone in his liking for catnip...

Sappho - old but comfy for now -

she'll soon be on her way to the otherworld, discarnation and beyond and back ...

until then, the sun shines on her and she skips away from wind and rain and Solomon

Yesterday (17 July 2008) Sappho sleeping comfortably in the hour before the vet came ... and we said and sang goodbye.

Sappho - age and illness showing in the eyes - and the "M" for monster on her forehead

(the cut from the last time she swiped me hasn't yet healed completely)

Twilight at Sappho and Mishmish's neighbouring graves among the bluebells and not far from a badger city

(we left the badgers an offering too - to thank them for not disturbing the cats - and we hope, in turn, that the cavorting cat spirits don't disturb the badgers).
